What was the research about?
Relationships are important for our development. Our understanding of the relation between friendship and mental health has been informed by research with adolescents and people in early adulthood. This project focussed on the friendships of people aged between 40 and 60 years old who had experienced mental health difficulties, with the aim of furthering our understanding.
What was involved?
Participants chose what stories of friendship they wished to share in a one-to-one interview, whatever their experiences of friendship or mental health difficulties had been.
Who took part?
People aged between 40 and 60 years old who had experienced mental health difficulties, lived in Nottingham, were English-speaking, and were not under the care of crisis services.
I would like to thank the good people at Middle Street Resource Centre, Nottingham Focus on Wellbeing, St.Peter's Gate Mental Health Group, and the Kick Back Club, for helping promote and participate in the research, as well as those individuals who took part and were not part of these groups. These organisations and the people who make them had some wonderful stories and do some great work.

Is the research still taking place?
20 people have been interviewed for this study, which is sufficient for the purposes of the research. If you were interested in taking part - thanks! - but I am no longer looking for participants. If you wanted to stay in touch with friendship and mental health-related issues, you may wish to check out Friendship Through Recovery.
